Where does Natural Gas come from?
Egoli Gas' product is procured through Sasol who, in turn, import the natural gas into South Africa by means of a pipeline from Temane, Northern Mozambique.
Can I use anyone to install my gas pipelines and equipment?
A registered gas contractor should install your gas equipment. When selecting a contractor, make sure that personnel are licensed gasfitters and experienced at installing gas equipment.
How do I detect a gas leak?
It has a smell similar to that of a rotten egg due to the sulphur based deodorant that is added to the gas. You can also use the soap-test method on your line to check for any leaks. A leak will be represented by a continual stream of air bubbles being generated right over the leak.
How do I maintain my gas equipment?
Regular inspection, cleaning and maintenance ensures your safety and helps keep your gas equipment operating at its optimum.
How do we determine price increases?
The gas price is linked to the price of oil as well as the producer price index. In terms of our agreement with our supplier, we only adjust the price of gas once a year in July.
According to the Gas Act (year), the gas price increase is derived 50% in terms crude oil price index and 50% producer price index (PPI). Egoli Gas is continuously striving to cushion the impact of price increases and provide a competitive energy price.How does the billing work, who reads the meter and when?
Egoli Gas will install a meter on your property, which will record the volume of gas passing through your meter. Once a month, a representative of Egoli Gas will read the meter. The difference between your current and previous readings will be used to calculate your consumption. We bill in gigajoules, not volume. You will be handed a list of meter reading dates for your area on connection.
How is the gas measured?
We measure natural gas by volume in cubic metres (m3). This value is then converted to a unit of energy. The metric standard for energy content is Joule (J). Your invoice is based on the amount of energy you use and measured in Gigajoules. One (1) Gigajoule is equal to 1,000,000,000 Joules.
How long does the whole process take from enquiry stage to connection date?
Each connection is different, but on average you can expect to be connected within 8 weeks of your first enquiry. If you get your internal pipe-work completed quicker, we will be able to connect you to our network sooner.
Is natural gas distributed through the pipelines safe?
The use of gas in the home is very safe, provided some simple safety guidelines are followed, ensuring an accident-free home.
Natural Gas is an unmatched source of instant, reliable energy, it is colourless and odourless and burns with a light blue flame and is lighter than air. This means that if a leak does occur, the gas rises into the surrounding atmosphere and is dispersed. To add to its safe use, small amounts of sulphur are added to the gas to give it the distinctive gas smell to alert users if a leak takes place (describe smell). All that is then required is to locate the source of the leak, rectify it and ventilate the area to allow the gas to safely disperse.
Our pipelines are generally buried underground - transporting the energy that you depend on every day to heat your home, generate electricity, cook your food and so much more. Our pipelines are a vital and efficient part of the Johannesburg's energy infrastructure.
If you detect a gas smell, you should follow these steps:
check if the pilot flame is burning;
look for an open gas tap without a burning flame and close it;
open all the doors and windows.
Egoli's gas is lighter than air and will escape harmlessly into the atmosphere:
do not operate any electrical appliances or switches;
if you develop a headache or start feeling nauseous, leave the room
immediately.I’d like to get connected to the Egoli Gas’ network, how do I do that?
You first need to supply us with your address in order for us to verify whether you are on our gas network. We will send an Egoli Gas staff member to your premises to verify where our pipeline runs and to point out where your connection point will be.
You then need to employ a qualified gas fitter to install your internal piping to the connection point at the boundary of your property. The gas fitter will issue you with a certificate of compliance.
Once we receive a completed application, with a copy of your ID, proof of payment of the connection fee and deposit as well as the compliance certificate, a meter will be installed and your gas service connected.What is a way-leave and how long does it take to get it approved?
A way-leave is an application we need to make to various Municipal departments and other private bodies. With this application we need to give detailed information as to where we need to dig at a particular point across a road.
The way-leave affords the other organisations the opportunity to advise us what services (eg. water pipes, telephone cables, etc.) are buried beneath the road. This is vital information, ensuring we do not cut into or break something beneath the road. This process normally takes in the region of 3 weeks.Where does my point of responsibility begin?
Egoli Gas is responsible for the maintenance and repairs of the gas service line that extends from the street and the customer meter station on or bordering your property. As a customer, it's your responsibility to maintain the gas piping that extends past the meter into your premises.
What makes gas so safe to use?
Most reputable gas equipment now has built-in safety features such as purging the equipment to remove any combustibles prior to start up, the flame-failure device to allow your appliance to automatically stop the flow of gas if the flame extinguishes, or automatic re-ignition to allow the appliance to relight itself if the flame is accidentally extinguished.
