Sasol's Transition to Methane-Rich Gas (MRG)
On 6 November 2025, Sasol announced a major step toward sustaining South Africa's gas market beyond June 2028. With production from Mozambique's Pande and Temane fields expected to decline, Sasol has advanced the development of Methane-Rich Gas (MRG) from its Secunda operations in Mpumalanga - a locally produced energy solution, that will bridge the supply gap between 2028 and 2030 while long-term Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) infrastructure is developed.
This new MRG supply solution, subject to regulatory approvals and infrastructure readiness, demonstrates Sasol's and the industry's shared commitment to maintaining stability and reliability in the domestic gas market.
What This Means for Egoli Gas Customers
We want to assure you that there will be no interruption to your gas supply during or after this transition.
The change in gas source will be fully managed by Egoli Gas in collaboration with Sasol, ensuring a seamless and transparent transition for all customers.
Egoli Gas's pipeline and metering infrastructure are already compatible with MRG, and we will maintain continuous monitoring of quality, pressure, and calorific value to meet national standards.
This development further enhances the security of supply for our customers, underlining the resilience of our network and the strength of our long-standing partnership with Sasol.
